SOUND: My sound installations essentially
deal with the displacement of sound in different environments,
where aspects of space are fundamental. This is important when
deciding on a site for an installation, where acoustics and sound content are instrumental to each piece. I am interested in the
use of recorded sound as a tool in which I can use to make people
aware of the space around them. I see the relationship between
recorded sound and actual sound as one which negotiates our senses
into a false sense of being, in which one cannot tell real sound
apart from recorded sound. In this way it is through the juxtaposition
of sound that makes people aware of their surroundings.
VIDEO: In using video projection, the images become
very much part of the experience. But, in my installations, see
the soundtrack as the thing that leads the images and helps to
convey the mood. In each case the viewer enters the installation
space to be confronted by a large video projection accompanied
by a mesmeric soundtrack. This work is fundamentally about immersion,
and how we are guided by our dominant senses, sight and sound.
I am creating an experience for the viewer, in which they can
relate to personally or just lose sense of reality for a couple
of minutes. The installations are comparable with dream sequences and/or nightmares where the sound drives the viewer
into the experience.
